The Peacemaker’s Court for the Seneca Nation of Indians (SNI), a federally recognized Native Nation with five noncontiguous territories in western New York, is implementing the SNI Diversion Project. The goal of the SNI Diversion Project is to reduce overreliance on emergency health care and criminal justice system encounters among high frequency opioid users through diversion programming that provides individualized wraparound services and incorporates best practices from court models. The Peacemaker’s Court is engaging New York State law enforcement and judicial systems to develop screening and referral processes for Native Americans to increase access to culturally appropriate treatment and individualized wraparound support provided by Seneca Nation Health System Behavioral Health and Seneca Strong, as well as peer recovery services.
